One of the most career-building and life-changing concepts that I’ve learned is that success breeds success.

You hear that concept referenced when you hear people say things like, “You earn the average of your 5 closest friends” or “You are the summation of your circle of influence”. There are many people that wonder about how this concept actually works, and I’m here to tell you that it’s much more logical than magical.

How does success breed success?

There’s a little more to it than just being friends with people who earn a decent income. It has to do more with the fact that you should circle yourself with people who have the things that you want, or are who you aim to become. In essence, you need to circle yourself with people who can give you advice and mentor you, only teaching you the actions that they themselves have taken to achieve success.

It’s so important to your success to know who to listen to, and that’s really the secret to this concept working the way it should. Yet so many people today (perhaps even you) take advice from those that have either a.) never achieved what you want to achieve or b.) have little experience in anything that would remotely get you close to where you want to go.

On the flip side, imagine if you wanted to become a better car sales professional or F&I manager or Dealer Principal. Doesn’t it make much more sense to have influencers that are already acheiving what you want?

I can remember first learning this concept and becoming completely overwhelmed at the fact that I didn’t know ANYONE who had the things that I wanted or was the embodiment of who I was aiming to become. Do you feel the same way? Are you wanting to take your career and life to the next level and know that you need a stronger circle of influence, but aren’t sure where or how to do so?

The key to all of this is that the influence has to be consistent. Everyone needs motivation, advice and training.

Don’t get me wrong. It’s not like you have to move in with these people in order to make big things happen for youself, but it’s best if you can get your questions answered when needed and when possible, it’s a great idea to have a mentor (or several) who can help you with various aspects of achieving success.

My misunderstanding

I always misunderstood successful people as a kid. To my own admission, I believed that success was either inherited or was the luck of the draw. I felt like the wealthy kept getting more and more because they had secrets that only they could share amongst one another.

I couldn’t have been more wrong.

As I’ve learned and have been mentored by some of the most successful people throughout North America, I’ve observed something spectacular. Truly successful people have a deeply routed desire to see others become successful. They admit that the information they have acted upon to achieve their success isn’t there’s to keep in the first place.

A Word to the Wise

This can also work in reverse though. If you circle yourself with those who have never acheived what you want, or do nothing but pull you down and steal your dreams, you are on a collision course with the ’10 years in the future’ you who will likely look back with regrets and wondering where you went wrong.

The idea that success breeds success is one of the driving objectives of The Dealer Playbook podcast.
